ATP Swabs: Head Off Cross-Contamination Through World-Class Tests
All organic matter contains adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and this universal unit of energy—found in all living cells—breaks down through metabolic processes. Hygiena testing kits leverage this process to rapidly determine the cleanliness of surfaces; when there is a presence of ATP, this indicates contamination, whether through allergens, bacteria, or other residue.
Through the swabbing process, users can collect and test a sample from a surface in their facilities, and the presence of ATP will trigger a biological light (bioluminescence) that can be measured with a special kind of ATP meter: the luminometer. The amount of light that is produced by luciferase (the chemical that causes fireflies to glow) in this process is directly connected to the amount of ATP that exists in the sample taken.
Rapid confirmation of ATP presence allows companies to immediately respond to enhance their cleaning protocols. They can thereby minimize or eliminate the threat of cross-contamination through effective sanitization procedures.
